How Zodiac Signs Get their meaning

Zodiac signs derive their meanings from the unique order or placement of all the other signs starting from the sign on the first house, which is known as the ascendant or rising sign. The 12 signs are interdependent and can’t be isolated from one another. This also explains why astrology works for individuals around the world, regardless of where they live!

Each sign is a fractal of the entire zodiac

A common way of looking at the signs is through the seasonal symbolism, starting with Aries as the beginning of Spring, Cancer as the beginning of Summer, etc. Yet we can even better understand their deeper meaning without any reference to the solar cycle from the Northern Hemisphere perspective.

These derivative delineations are foundational and work the same way in all Zodiac-based astrology systems because they exemplify or describe the archetype of each sign. For this reason, the description of a sign does not and can not fully describe an individual, whose expression will depend on the complex interplay of planets and other points in their unique natal chart.

Any Planet in a particular sign will be operating from an archetypal energy, so the meaning of a Planet (answering the question: Who or What?) should be combined with the significance of the House it occupies (answering the question: Where or In What Area of Life?) along with the archetype of the Zodiac Sign (answering the question: How?).

In addition to this, the aspects, or how the different planets and points interact with each other, also need to be understood to properly interpret a horoscope.
